Perspectives from the Field

In my experience guiding 58 villages to ODF status, the most important factor was not funding or technology — it was community ownership. When village leaders issued official circulars and cadres felt responsible for the outcomes, sanitation programs continued even after external support ended.
The Power of Community Ownership in Sanitation
One of the most impactful shifts I witnessed was the move from intuition-based village planning to evidence-based planning. When we introduced systematic monitoring in Gorontalo, the 25% reduction in diarrhoea cases was not a coincidence — it was the result of cadres having real data to make real decisions.
Data-Driven Decision-Making at Village Level
In remote communities in NTT, we constantly face a dilemma: the push for digital health reporting versus the reality of poor connectivity. My approach has always been hybrid — digital tools for data quality, manual backups for resilience. The goal is not to be fully digital; it is to be fully accountable.
